  • silkwormsThose silkworms are breaking my heart. They are not eating. I felt so helpless yesterday. All they do is sleep. Like what sick people do.

Is this what new parents feel when their baby won’t eat or when they get sick? You just don’t know what to do. But of course this is on a much smaller scale.

The United Air commercial came on last night during American Idol, and the song playing was “here we go ’round the mulberry bush”. And then I just felt terrible because I was reminded again of my silkworms. (Silkworms only eat mulberry leaves.)

I couldn’t take it anymore; sitting around doing nothing. For some reason I had an impression that there was a mulberry tree in the golf course by my Parent’s house, so I hopped in my car after the show ended. The place was dark, I just had to remember where the tree was. And lo and behold, I found it! And it was indeed a mulberry tree! I found my silkworms fresh food! *ecstatic*

I rushed back home, cleaned it and the little one (Kimono) started eating within minutes. But then it stopped. Well, at least it ate some. But the two bigger ones just kept sleeping! Wake up, fresh food here!

Thanks to Ray, now I know they aren’t eating b/c they are ready to shed their skin. *phew* Silkworms molt 4 times, each time getting bigger and fatter! Then they’ll spin themselves into a silk cocoon, later emerging as a moth to mate, lay eggs, then die.

(To the right is a picture of two random silkworms from online, not mine.)

  • hey ting! : ) i missed you at EV on saturday, but sam and i had a great conversation about bugs! hope youre doing well!

..and i just had a dream about silkworms the other day..

  • brings back memories from taiwan.

  • Haha, I’m the supplier of the worms. Ennhwie is the supplier of the leaves.

  • so cute! but dont they smell?

  • *whew* it’s good to know they aren’t sick.  but i dunno…i think everyone is kinda right, silkworms look at little scary, jiggly like.  i remember once in preschool i had to sleep on a cot at nap time and it was under the tank where we kept the caterpillars, but they kinda looked like silk worms. there was no lid on the tank and there like 3 or 4 of them crawling on the edge of the tank…i was so scared it would drop on me if i fell asleep and crawl into my clothes!

  • I took a hike the other day and the trees were filled with silked worms. It looked like a bad scifi movie. Silk everywhere.

  • Whew!  Glad the silkworms are going okay.  Boy, if you treat your silkworms that good, you’re kids are definately gonna be spoiled. lol.

  • you raise silkworms?
