I finished reading a memoir of a teenage girl during the Cultural Revolution last weekend. So it evoked a curiosity to know more. When I was younger, I was not a fan of history, but this is actually some pretty interesting stuff. I've never been to China, wasn't even alive when it happened, but I'm so thankful for the freedom that we have.
Can you believe that there were slogans like "Parents may love me, but not as much as Chairman Mao".
Can you believe that they learn phrases in English class like "Lay down your arms and we will spare your lives".
Some serious brain washing!
Red Scarf Girl was actually written for young readers, but I found it at a thrift store a month ago and it was given good reviews and awards. I'm glad I picked it up.
* Found another book that same day, a fictionalized story of a Mughal empress. I'm reading this now.
* A book came in the mail today from an eBay purchase, can't wait to read it.
* I went to the library today and got Bram Stocker's "Dracula" for a quarter! Score!
So excited!
I
reading. Please send any good book recommendations my way. Thanks!

I recommed the book "Heavenly Man" http://www.crossroad.to/Excerpts/books/faith_under_fire/heavenly-man.htm. It is about a Christian guy who went through persecution at China. It is rather inspiring for me. Hope you will enjoy it. I have the book if you would like to borrow it some day.
I enjoyed the UNauthorized biography of Chairman Mao by Dr. Li.
You get to see where that crazy way of thinking came from!!!
I highly recommend "Wild Swans". You can learn a lot of history too.
some crazy stuff happened during the cultural revolution. we are very lucky we don't live during those times.

Wow, you are a reader
i started reading a book called Mortified. It's bascially an anthology of high school journals from awkward teenagers w/ present day commentary from those people as adults. It's pretty funny, and I'm not a reader even.
