There are certain dates that you just don't forget. Especially if you've celebrated it almost every year of your life.
May 16th. Today is Grandpa's birthday.
I found myself singing one of his favorite songs today out of the blue. Haven't sang it for quite some time:
All night, all day, angels watching over me, my Lord.
All night, all day, angels watching over me.
Just that... it's so simple. He said that he sang that song a lot when he was studying at Cambridge. His family was back home in Taiwan. He sang this especially when he felt alone.
When we were clearing out our garage just a couple months ago, we found two boxes of Grandpa's books! He made them in his spare time out of paper that we were going to throw away. I was so shocked how many there were. This is just the top layer of one box. We'd hear him at 2 in the morning pounding staples into thick stacks of paper. They ranged from regular notebook sizes to maybe the size of a fingernail. We couldn't bear to throw this away.
I actually used it as an illustration once with our Sunday School kids. How something once worthless could be something useful again... and even cherished. How God saved us and called us His children. Sweet redemption.
My Dad donned a graduation robe and walked to the sound of Pomp and Circucumstance this past Saturday. He worked real hard and gave up a lot to receive a Certificate of Lay Ministry from Logos Seminary. Oh, we are so proud of him. I can only imagine how excited and happy this would have made my Grandparents. Their influence have made such a difference in our lives.
Also, a very happy birthday to my beautiful cousin, Gloria!

what kind of books are they?
he took a piece of paper that has writing on one side and folded in to expose just the clean side to make like a scratch paper book. he used those to write his poems, sermons... all the ones in the picture are blank ones. for some of the little ones, he'd write titles in chinese in the front like "love", "joy", "peace", "patience", "wisdom", "perseverance"... and he'd put different sized ones together and give them to us as gifts.
yay for sunday school lessons, and yay for BABA!
