aww, sad. it’s always the saddest when you discover them the next day….limp and unmoving, or hardened due to rigor mortis. i can so picture the dead mantid. r.i.p.
She gave herself for her little ones … who will then (under Sam’s gleeful watch) consume one another …
“Duncan McLeod … there can be only one” (again!)
You really ought to free the winner. Like Gladiator or something.
i didn’t know that they die after laying eggs. i did know that female mantids will sometimes eat their mates. sorry to hear that.
survival of the fittest? do the little ones eat each other as the hatch, or something? i want to know more.
Sad…well hopefully you’ll get some baby mantids
@SarahakaHungry - hi sarah, i’m not sure about if female mantids die soon after they lay eggs. but a lot of insects seem to do so. ours sadly did. that’s true that the female mantids eat their mates while the act isn’t even over. how sad, usually head first! when the little ones hatch, if they’re not given enough space or food, then they will start to eat each other.
@ jiuru: ew nasty!
@ fraychel: and that mcleod reference, that’s really dates you, ray! or should i say us? ;p @ jiuru: your sis wears reading glasses too? that makes me feel better. :)
